Brexit – Eurogate Logistics

The Eurogate Group continues to monitoring Brexit very closely in order to ensure we are prepared for every eventuality. As a multinational European company, it is our sincere hope that the final Brexit agreement creates minimal disruption to the flow of cargo between the EU and the UK but we have procedures in place to meet any new requirements that may arise.

Despite the theoretical deadline now being the 30th of October 2019 there is still the possibility of an earlier exit so we are recommending that all of our customers and partners exercise caution and ensure they too are prepared for a no deal Brexit as early as 22nd May 2019 as a worst case scenario.

A ‘No Deal Brexit’ would bring immediate changes to procedures meaning that all free circulation of movements of goods between the UK and EU would end. Businesses will have to apply the same customs/excise rules to goods moving between the UK and the EU as are currently applied in cases where goods move between the UK and a country outside of the EU.

Fortunately, here at Eurogate Logistics we operate freight services worldwide and therefore negotiate UK, European and many other international customs clearance procedures on a daily basis so we are in a position to assist our clients in any way necessary.

For the benefit of any clients who only have experience of moving cargo within the European Union, please be aware of the following basic essential criteria for customs clearance procedures.

  • EORI NUMBERS: Please check that your company has a valid EORI number. This is a vital requirement for customs clearance. If you do not have an EORI number you can apply for one here; gov.uk/eori
  • COMMODITY CODES: Individual commodity codes apply to all cargo transiting internationally and you must ensure that the correct commodity codes are in place for the goods you are exporting or importing. The codes are used in customs declarations and ensure that correct duty is applied. You can find out more about Commodity codes here: gov.uk/trade-tariff
  • COMMERCIAL INVOICES / PACKING LISTS: In order to transit customs all shipments must have a commercial invoice provided by the exporter and containing the following minimum information.
  1. Exporters full name and address including vat number and EORI number
  2. Importers full name and address, VAT number and contact details
  3. Description and value of goods
  4. Commodity Codes,
  5. Gross and nett weights, Packaging details
  6. Country of Origin.
